In the lands of Kyra horses roam wild, free from hands of humans, living on land unseen by the human eye. They lived peacefully in the earlier years, until a brute named Demetri came to live upon their lands. Demetri dreamed of armies of horses, of thousands of slaves doing his bidding. He became sick with these ideas, unable to think of anything else, and soon, his thoughts became reality. He soon was sick with power, doing anything he could to gain more land. He had the most mares in the land and each and every one of them was to bare his foal.
The thought of more of him was horror. The horses who lived in fear begun to kill off the pregnant mares when darkness came. They thought they had taken them all down, that was because of one stallion's foolish mistake. A stag named Trifius fell in love with one of the pregnant mares and pretended she was baring his foal, so the mare stayed living. It remained secret, they were not to tell Demetri, or Trifius would be killed. But one of his closer friends found out the secret, the lie Trifius had told and told Demetri. Trifius was executed immediately, and Demetri brought the mare into special confinement to keep her safe from the other horses.
The mare started to go crazy, her only company was Demetri and his daily beatings and harsh words. Her mind begun to change, she realized maybe the crazed stallion wasn't so bad after all. She begun to get used to the beatings, and actually began to like Demetri. She gave birth to a pure black colt, handsome as can be, eyes were a dark blue. After the foaling she was kicked out of the security confinement to live with the others. Demetri raised the foal himself for several months, only bringing the mare in to feed the foal.
Little did Demetri know that a mutiny was brewing, all his slaves against him except that one mare. So as he bonded with his baby, his slaves were planning on how to kill him. The mare of course was on his side though, so she made plans to rescue him and their baby, who she had named Cobalt.
When the day of the mutiny came, the mare found Demetri and tried to warn him, but the slaves were already closing in. In fear for her own life she bolted, motherly instinct kicking in, she took her baby with her. She left Demetri to die and lived by herself, just with Cobalt for several months. She grew ill living by herself and eventually was too weak to do much. She slowly moved back towards the slaves, now free, and allowed Cobalt to join their ranks before she died of illness.
Little did she know releasing Cobalt was releasing a wrath so sick that it would change the equine's life forever. And her life would not be the last life the illness took. Cobalt took control at the age of two, he was very convincing and powerful. The horses listened at first, many actually joining his side. He had so much power on his side in fact that no one dare try to kill him.
After a while of ruling, Cobalt was taken out by the influenza. Surprisingly, with him dead, not much changed. Many other horses that had supported him just went up and took his place, lots of dark horses gaining lots of power. No horse ruled the land as he did, but they did rule their herds like him. Many tried to copy him in one way or another, calling themselves Cobalt.
Cobalt had named the ranks. He called himself a Reaper, and that would also be the name of his future herd. The ones who chose his side, only the betas and royals were the Reapers. It was an exclusive herd that only Cobalt picked joiners for. The rest were his slaves. He had so many slaves that he begun loosing track of them, little by little, the slaves escaped, forming their own alliances.
There were those who fit in with Cobalt's type of personality, but were not royal to him, they were called the Durins. They were evil, and supported Cobalt, easily choosing to pick his side if another war ever broke out. They envied him and idolized him. Some so sick with power and envy for him that they in fact planned to join his ranks, or kill him to get there.
Then there were those who just couldn't decide, neutral might you say. They were stuck between the evil path and the light path, no idea which way they would go if a war struck. Their mood swings were sudden, sometimes heavenly, then the next minute evil. They were called the Tanas. They preferred to keep to themselves and avoid war as they would be stuck in the middle.
Finally there were those who hated the Reapers and the Durins, yet hated the thought of war more. So friendly and light that they lived in harmony, agreeing upon everything. They feared war greatly, though they wanted to bring all evil down. They sided partly with the Tanas, at least the Tanas who chose to go the light route. The light ones were known as the Nixies.
And lately, there has been brief sightings of strange and vicious animals. Horses are disappearing by the dozen, the disease isnt the only problem. What is this animal, will they be able to conquer it's power? Is it actually dangerous, or are the disappearances just coincidence?
Another oddity was that, the equines who survived the illness, rare it was, but the ones who did managed to escape the life threatening illness with... Power. Some were able to control ice, others fire, some could shape shift, others would control wind and flight.... What was going on? What was this illness?
Illness spread, tension as well. Anyone could tell a war was brewing, just who would start it? When would it errupt? As for the illness, the horses wondered, what symptoms would they get? Each horse died differently. Would they survive the mysterious outbreak of influenza? Or would they fall like many of the other equines? The biggest question was: Would the war take their lives, or a horrid illness, always taking lives in a painful way. Or would they survive and live their lives out as they should?
